FAST WALKING.
In giving a description of O’Connor’s feat of walking seven miles Avithin the hour the Wellington Chronicle says : —The sevcutJi mile proved ratlior entertaining. A sih 7 er eup had been offered to anyone Avho Avould succeed in keeping up with O’Connor in this last mile, and Mr Ncary, a Wanganui pcd., came up to the scratch. For half a dozen laps all Avent avcll, but then it became evident that Mr Neary’s fate was sealed. By 7 the Avorking of his body 7, his shaky strides, and tho agonising contortions of his face, it Avas palpable that he was in distress. He moved on, howcA 7 er, until suddenly 7 the champion gave a spurt, and was about over-lapping him Avhen Ncary made an expeditious retreat from the arena. Then arose a cry 7 of “ Zesch,” and sure enough that plucky amateur came trudging round, but he likoAvisc soon gave up the struggle amidst great laughter, and O’Connor a short lime afterwards put on a grand spurt, and finished the seventh mile in 7min. 21secs—thus having accomplished the 7 miles 154 yards in 58min. SOsccs. Mr O’Connor is about sft XOin in height, lias A 7 eiy long and sinewy legs, great poAvers of endurance, ami takes a stride of 3ft 9in.
