WAVERLEY.
[f no .m ou u uu n u usro xn e x t.]
I)RANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL. Friday Evening. Tin; Combination Troupe played here on Wednesday evening, and if the audience Avas small the entertainment provided Avas of a very second-rate character. It seems strange that so few companies of merit visit Waverley, as the settlers here arc quite able to appreciate anything good, and willing to pay liberally tor a good entertainment. Boor playing in a small community is certain failure. Su ii-CoXTi;AeT.s .—Boveral of the subcontractors have finished their sections of the earthwork, and the general outline of the Avotk can be traced in its Avindings, although avc have nearly a straight run for two miles at the Waverley end. It is reported that one of the sub-contractors is about giA 7 ing tip his section, as it is not paying ; but this may be only rumor. The Aveather has been particularly favourable to farming operations. There Avill be a considerable breath under cereals this season ; and expecting, as people do, that the Railway will be opened as far as Waverley 7 in the early part of next year, there Avill be a coiiA-enient outlet for our surplus grain and general farm produce* It is not likely there will be the same delay and uncertainty in the opening of this section of line as there lias been of the line from Kai Iwi to Waitotara, for the contractors arc pushing on the Avork rapidly 7 , and are not likely to haA 7 e any impediment to prevent early 7 completion. Goilse Cutting.—lt is a rather stupid practice to cut gorsc hedges and IcaA'e the cutting to catch fire when dry weather comes, or a careless smoker or mischievous boy passes along. This seems to be the case here, ami particularly the road leading to the School-house, and certainly the matter ought to receive attention from some one, as prevention is better than euro, not to mention the extra trouble often entailed. Business seems to luwc taken a turn Avith tbo Aveather, as more people arc stirring about ; and hoAvever great the depression, Avhen the Aveather is good and
ladies can move about business irapvoA 7 es in the drapery 7 line. I.O.G.T.—The usual bi-monthly meeting of the WaA r erley r Lodge No. 205 Avas held on Thursday 7 evening, at the old Town Hall, Much of tire business Avas of a private nature, but most of the evening Avas spent in discussing how to spread the order in our immediate neighbourhood, and though no definite conclusion Avas arrived at, all members Avere earnest in the cause. The Waverley Good Templars contemplate paying a visit to the “ Star of Patea Lodge ” at au early date.
