ERA NCR OFFICE OF THE MAIL, , Friday 7 Evening. Mr Bryce arrived on Wednesday afternoon, as also did Sir Dillon 8011. Of course Mr Biycc has had to receive more deputations. One had reference to getting a road made through Whercroa and Mokoja nati\ 7 c resoiwes ; but Mr Bryce bold out little hope that the Government Avould take any steps in the matter. A deputation from settlers in and around Normauby also “nailed” him Avith the view of urging on Government the necessity of building a bridge over the Waingongora on the road from Manaia to Normanby. Mr Bryce said that Avhile fully 7 recognising the importance of the Avork, the Government were not in such a good financial jjasition as to Avarrant them proceeding Avith expenditure in that direction. I have not heard Avhat brings Sir Dillon up again, but 1 presume the Native Commission is to be a continuous one, and that they will naturally be anxious about the settlement of the coast, as they arc solely responsible for the results, every recommendation put forth by them having been acceded to. The onus of failure of the scheme must rest on their shoulders. A detachment of the unemployed marched from Parihaka on Tuesday, and are now stationed close to the new toAvn - ship of Manaia, They will be employed making a road from that township to Normauby. Mr D. Atkinson is in charge of the road party. At the K.M. Court yesterday, before C. Wray. R.M., a few unimportant eases were heard, mostly for trespassing on horseback on the footpaths; There is a good deal of sickness about at present, owing to a great extent to the bad drainage of the town. The Town Board, it seems, in forming the streets did not allow enough fall : consequently 7 stagnant water lies in the gutters, spreading disease and damaging the cleanly appearance of the town.
