BRANCH OFFICE OF THE HAIL, Monday Evening. Puhlic Meeting. —A public meeting of residents was held in the old Town Hall on Friday evening, to consider the action of Government in imposing Gd extra on telegrams to and from Wavcrlcy. Mr Fookcs, who had been the chief mover in the matter, was called to the chair, and explained the object of the mooting. Various plans of procedure were proposed, but it was resolved that a petition be drawn up by Messrs Mitchell, Scott, and the Chairman representing the case, and that this should bo signed by as many residents as possible before transmitting it to Wellington. There lias been some strange oversight somewhere, or some considerations other than those of economy which must have weighed in the arrangement of the scale of . non-paying offices; a place called Blenheim seems to be specially favored in being well supplied with public funds for railway as well as telegraphic purposes. If our Waverclcy movement does no good it can do no harm, and fewer telegrams will serve the public in the meantime.
Chukcu of England.— Service was bold in this church yesterday morning, Mr G. S. Bridge having been appointed lay reader here. The attendance was very good, and there is a general of satisfaction expressed at the arrangement, as Mrißridge is certainly in every respect well qualified to fill the office. WAIRGA HIGHWAY BOARD.
