SEPARATE COUNTY. ; A public meeting was held at the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon, called for the purpose of discussing the advisability: of forming a separate County, &c. Mr[J. Livingstone being voted to the chair. Mr Moore Hunter proposed “ That, in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that the Hawcra Registration District should be formed into a new County : and for that object a petition bo drawn up,, signed, and forwarded to the Governor in Council, asking that this bo done.” He said it was a safe principle that people should manage their own affairs, and not leave them to others. He thought that the County proposed would be quite large enough for good government, and a large saving would be effected by emerging the Road Boards into the County. Storekeepers told him they could get goods cheaper from Waitara than Patea, and when the railway ran into Hawera their interests with the southern portion of the Patea County would be very much changed, and their connection with Patea would then be very small. , . Mr G. W. Gane seconded the resolution, which was carried. Mr C. Quin proposed “ That a Committee be appointed, consisting of Messrs Livingston, Inkster, Gane, Hunter, King, and Farrington, to arrange for obtaining the necessary names to the petition and forwarding the same to the Governor, and that those signing the petition be asked to' give a shilling towards the expenses.” Mr Finlayson seconded the resolution.
