NORMANBY.
[k ROM 'Dull COISISKSP 0N1) K N T.] ' Monday Evening. A deputation had been appointed from here to wait on Mr Bryce on bis return from Parihaka, petitioning Government that the road.leading through the Township to the-Waimate Plains should bo formed,' and the Waihgongoro road be made. This' is, however, unnecessary now, as 1 hear that a contingent of the unemployed arc to be put upon the job at once. This road will be exceedingly useful to Normanby, as at present the Plains, although, only a mile off, are practically closed to all but horsemen, owisjg to the river being unbridged ; and as the land on the other aide is so soon to be opened up, no doubt there will be many who will be coming this way to sec it. Normanby is not in the position of Hawera in the matter of commission agents, as (if I remember rightly) your Correspondent once said there was talk of getting up a cricket eleven of those gentlemen ; for, as they had plenty of time on hand to practise, they would be sure to play well. We can only boast one, but that one is certainly to be congratulated on the exceedingly tasteful and pretty littte office lie has lately moved into on its completion. It is really an improvement to the street, which certainly cannot at the present time boast man} 7 buildings with pretensions to architectural beauty. Perhaps, however there is some excuse in poverty, and hard times to be pleaded for the neglect of some buildings, such as the Bank of New Zealand, for instance. The Ist September being the day fixed for the closing of tenders for the Townhall, Mr Lockington’s tender of £529 4s 5d was accepted, and the work will be begun as soon as the legal formalities for the transfer of the land are completedMr Hirst has generously presented the section for the purpose. It is adjoining the police-station which has lately been built, and the company arc fortunate in having such a good position for the Hall, which will bo a decided improvemrnt to the place. If the work can be started in about a month or six weeks, it will be finished sufficiently by Christmas to allow of an entertainment being given, so that we may fairly look forward to having some festive times.
