KAKARAMEA.

(F ROM O U U C O R U K SPOKDE N T.) Wednesday Evening. A meeting of the Library Committee was held at the Town Hall on Monday. Present; Messrs Brown (chairman), Glover, Salmon, and Willis. The principal business was the revision of the old code of rules and tho drawing up of additional ones. Accounts passed for payment : Mr A. D. Willis, £2 10s Id ; Mr Slater, 15s. The meeting adjourned to September 20th. It is rumoured that another entertainment in aid of the Institute is likely to come off in a short time. I must record a curious and interesting instance of fostering. Two lambs on Mr Fairweatlier’s farm lost their mothers, and would doubtless have perished but for the kindness of a collie, which, having been deprived of her own small family, has

taken pity on the little orphans, and behaves to them in every respect as a loving parent should. She not only provides them with the needful sustenance, upon which they thrive admirably, but allows them also to sleep in her kennel, and evinces the same care and attachment to them that she would to her own offspring. Railway Works are progressing satisfactorily. A considerable portion of the permanent way is now formed and ready for ballasting. Another contingent of unemployed is expected daily. If the newcomers prove to be as orderlcy and well conducted as those who are now at work, the townspeople will have no reason to regret their advent.
