NORMANBY.
[f uu ,m our cob ues ro x den t.] Wednesday Evening. Our llawera friends took the opportunity of Mr Bryce’s presence in their town on Thursday last, to urge on him the advisability of having a District Land Office there. The deputation were strong on the point of the centrality of llawera, it being about the middle of the district, but the other point of its nearness to the land to be sold they did not so prominently bring before the Minister. I cannot see in any way what claim llawera can have compared with Nonnanby to the establishment of such an office. If proximity to the land is considered, wo have the advantage ; if convenience to the outside world, wo arc in no worse position. It is true llawera is just about the centre of the district (and in the secret opinion of tho deputation, is evidently the “ hub of the universe”) ; but as in Mr Bryce’s opinion civilisation lies the other end of the district, 1 do uot know that their centrality is much to be proud of. in one of Ur Holmes’s books, an ardent Bostonian is stated to have believed that one end of the earth’s axis made its appearance in that city. Some of our llawera friends must fancy the other end juts out somewhere in that township. In your Saturday’s issue, I mentioned the case of a man who had got the good or bud luck, 1 hardly know which, of having his chimney burnt. In case any of your readers should bo liable to bo troubled in tbe same way, I will just mention a preventive which is cheap and effectual. Take a goose—your neighbor’s if possible—and put him down the chimney. He will scratch and flutter hard to get up, and sink slowly down all the while, bringing down the soot. It is just possible your neighbour may object, but on your pointing out the economy, efficiency, and simplicity of such a method, no reasonable man can persist in objection.
