NORMANBY.

(F RO M OUR CORRESPONDENT.} Monday Evening. Friday was considerably enlivened by the conduct of a certain busbman, who came into the township to draw about £IOO for the completion of a road contract on which he bad been engaged with two other men. He tried hard to get his cheque cashed after bank hours on Thursday, but as he could not do this he drew the money as soon as possible on Friday, and disappeared without paying his mates or one or two tradesmen to whom he owed money. Ho was, however, overtaken at Hawera, and by some means brought back ; and I understand his creditors have since obtained their money. The feelings of his mates towards him mast now be anything but kindly. The Rev. James Tony, on Friday evening, delivered a lecture on “ Home Life,’ and the Presbyterian Chapel was completely filled, the audience to all appearance enjoying the lecture thoroughly. The choir from Hawera attended, and their singing afforded great pleasure, several of the pieces being well rendered. Sir Leslie Charles’s singing was also greatly appreciated, as it deserved to be. To-morrow (Tuesday) is to be held the meeting af the Ngairo district settlers, in order to form a Road Board. There is a strong feeling that a young and struggling district like the Tc Ngaire should not he saddled at starting with such an incubus as the Mountain Road. If the Government cannot or will not complete the formation, it is felt that the work should be taken up by the County Council, as it exists for the benefit of the Comity and not of the settlers only.
