WAVERLEY.

[from our correspondent.]

BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL Monday Evening. The Bachelor's Ball was a success. The hall was well lighted, the new chandeliers having made tho illumination all that could be desired. The decorations were neatly and tastefully got up, and must have been the work of an adept at artistic effect. Tho supply of creature comforts was arranged for by 7 Mr Ballam, of the Commercial ; and, as usual, be took care there should be everything of the best quality. There must have been about 70 couples, and all seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly well. The committee of management were satisfied with the result of their endeavours. As in all such cases, the time varied, but the assemblage was one of tho most respectable wc have seen in Waverley. Concert. —It was reported that the members of the Church of England choir were to give a concert in aid of the building fund of tho new church, but having been successful in raising funds from other sources the projected concert was allowed to drop. The Presbyterians are now to have a concert in aid of the funds of their church, and as they have got the right man in their psalmody leader, (Mr Swinbournc) to carry out a programme, there is little doubt the concert will be a success. Church funds, like everything else, must feel these hard times, and the friends of the Church can do no better than add their mite to such a fund either in services or cash, to help the finances. Storm. —On Saturday night a severe storm broke over this district. About two o’clock on Sunday morning the thunder and lightning were in full play. It must

be a considerable time since such a storm has passed over this coast, and one could have imagined that ho was in Australia, not having experienced such a storm during some years residence in this part of New Zealand.
