HAWERA.

JIM AM'JI OFFICE OF THE MAIL Monday Livening. A public meeting, called by the Ilawera Town Hoard, was held at Lloyd's diningroom on Saturday night. Air Parringtum in the absence of the Chairman of the Hoard, was voted to the chair. Mr King proposed, and -Air Cochrane seconded, “That this meeting is of opinion that the railway works between Ilawera and Normanby should bo commenced without any further delay, in accordance with the recommendation of the liailway Commission, so that the line may be completed at the same lime as the section from Mangawhero.” Mr King thought action should be taken at once to complete this work, otherwise Ilawera might wait for years before seeing the railway into the town. There had been enough delay in completing the line from New Plymouth already. lie knew personally that goods could be imported from Dunedin by way of New Plymouth cheaper than via Carlyle. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr Dn(HU proposed, “ That this meeting would advocate the advisability of erecting a Court House in Ilawera, which could be also used as Laud-Office and for other public business.” He thought: that, seeing the large si/c Ilawera was getting, that it was quite lime we had such a building erected, for no doubt we should soon require a ILAL, and it was only right that he should have a proper building to sit in. Mr Saunders would warmly second the motion.

Mr iV-lauison thought tlial, seeing Hint Hie Town Hall Co. was receiving Hu o for it, it was foolishness to suggest a Court House.

Mr .Murray thought, from what he saw, a gaol was more required than a Court House. Mr King strongly supported the motion. Mr Bate, looking at the present financial state of the colony, doubted if the Government would accede to the proposition, though he thought it a good one ; and he had fiiat faith in Uawera that he thought the Town Hall would be able to do very well without the ,£SO from the Government. Mr Dawson said he did not sec why Hawera should not have a Court I louse, as smaller and less important towns down the coast had large Court Houses erected. The motion was carried unanimously. .Mr Bate proposed, “ That this meeting would suggest that the Clerk of the Court, Mr Wilkinson, he appointed a Dis triet Court Clerk, and thus obviate the inconvenience and consequent expense of at* lending bankruptcy meetings in Carlyle ; and that periodical sittings of the District Court be held at Hawera.” Mr McLdowio seconded the motion. Mr Saunders said that before the meeting broke up, he would suggest that some sort of association ho formed to watch the interest of the district. He knew of such associations being of great use to a district.

After some discussion it was resolved to postpone the matter for the meeting re the comity, to be hold on the 28th inst.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman con eluded 11 io business.
