HAWERA.
[from our correspondent.] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE 31 AIL, Friday Evening. Mr Parker, who has been in charge of the Bank of New South Wales some time, loft on Thursday for New Plymouth to relieve the manager there for a short time. During his stay here ho has made many friends who feel sincere regret at his departure. Mr Flint, from the Nelson branch, takes his place here. Those Football Players who did not go to Wanganui in the County team intend to get a team of eighteen together to try conclusions with the victors in the late match. It is intended that the game shall be played at Patea, and at about the end of the month. The Hawkra Cricket Club have been farther improving the ground of late, by planting a choice lot of English trees, in addition to those planted last year. In a year or two this ground will be one of the best and prettiest in New Zealand for its size. The ladies and gentlemen who have so kindly volunteered to got up another concert in aid of the Institute are practising regularly. The next concert is expected to be superior to the former in every way. At the R. M. Court to-day Captain Wray presided. The cases were all civil claims for debts. Mr Mackenzie, sheep inspector, visited Ha worn on Tuesday, but found nothing wrong with the jum-buck. Some Agitation is going on for the formation of a separate County, from Manawapou to Tanga tarn. A semiprivate meeting is to be held on Saturday to consider the matter, before bringing it into public discussion. Probably this is the outcome of the neglect which the main roads at this end receive. The road between here and Normanby is getting badly cutup. A few dray loads put on a month or two back would have saved all this ; but the Chairman of the Council scorns to have peculiar ideas about this portion of the County road. He says it is the Mountain road, and that there is no money available for it.
Boad-siaking at Hawera* —At the last meeting of the Land Board, Mr Bavlcymnn asked the Commissioner of Crown Lands whether the work of opening the roads in the Ngairc District is carried on under the authority of the Land Board, and, if so, whether the work has been let by public lender? —The Chairman said the Land Board had nothing whatever to do with the making of the roads. The works were authorised by a vote of the House, and were carried out under the supervision of the Banger and the Crown Lands Commissioner. He had received orders at first from the Government to let the works by public tender. It being afterwards represented to the Government that there were a number of unemployed in the district, the Government directed that the works on the other side of Maugawhero should be cut up into small sections, so as to give settlers . the chance of getting work on the roads. The Hanger had compiled a statement showing how the work had been let, and the amount of work done, as follows.:—Beads felled, 26; contracts, 42 ; contracts let to new settlers,; 28; contracts let to deferred payment settlers, 8. He said the statement in the Patea Mail, as to certain settlers getting all the contracts, was not correct.
