[F R0 M 0U R COR UE».I'O, ND E N T.] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAID Friday Evening. Fire. —A straw-stack belonging to Mr Ballam, Commercial Hotel, was found to be on fire early on Thursday morning, and was totally destroyed. The fire was probably the work of some loafer who had been lighting his pipe during the night. Nothing could be done by the spectators, as there is no supply of water convenient to the township : and the only satisfaction was found in the fact that the absence of wind prevented the fire from doing farther damage. Mutual Improvement Association. — The usual meeting of this society was held in the School-room, on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance of members, and several new names were enrolled. An essay was read by Mr .Scott on the “ Progress of Colonization,” which was well received. Several members criticised the essay, expressing their opinions freely on tiro subject, and (lie mode of treating it. As the members get accustomed to each other, a certain shyness will pass off ; and it is to be hoped the society will become a benefit to many. Air W. Milne is to open a discussion on “ The Financial Position of Now Zealand,” on the next evening for debate ; while readings and recitations will be given by several members at the next meeting. English Church.—This building is now nearly completed, the painters being busy at work on the outside. It certainly assumes a neat appearance, and the members and adherents of the Church of England are to be congratulated on the immediate prospect of having so neat a church which they can call their own.
