In consecinence of criticisms on the conduct of the police in the capture of the Kelly gang, a select committee has been appointed by the Assembly to enquire into the conduct of the police in capturing the outlaws. INDIAN FINANCIAL DEFICIT. IMMENSE WAR EXPENDITURE. London, 6tb. In the House of Commons _to-day, tbc Marquis of Harlington, Secretary of State for India, made a statement concerning Indian hnances. He showed that the Afghan war expenditure exceeded the estimate by nine millions. The present Indian Budget deficit he stated at three millions. QUEEESLAND POLITICS. BIG RAILWAY SCHEME. Brisbane, Wednesday. Parliament was opened yesterday by the acting Governor, who, in a speech on the occasion, announced that Bills would be submitted for a rad way to tbe Gulf of Carpenteria, for augmentation of the revenue, and for other objects, After the meeting of Parliament, the leader of the Opposition presented a petition from Mr Hemmant, formerly Colonial Treasurer, but now residing in England, charging the Premier with maladministration of the business of the colony during his visit to England. Mr Mcllwraith, the Premier, made a statement replying effectively to Mr Heimnant’s charges. IRISH TENANT COMPENSATION. London, 6th. In the House of Commons a bill has
been read a second time for giving - compensation to Irish tenants under certain proposed conditions.
COLONIAL MARKETS. . Melbourne, Wednesday. Sugars 10s higher. VICTORIA ELECTION STRUGGLE. Melbourne, Wednesday. ’ In the forthcoming elections, Mr Gillies, Mr Service, Mr Ramsay, Sir Gavan Duffy, members of the Ministry, are unopposed. Most of the other Ministers are opposed; also Mr John O’Shaunessy. Wednesday, Later. Only the seats of four Ministers mentioned in previous telegram will be uncontested. All oilier seals will be contested. MELBOURNE EXHIBITION GOODS. Melbourne, Wednesday. The delivery of exhibits at the Exhibition building has commenced. HOMEWARD MAILS. London, Gib. The Homeward mails via ’Frisco, which left New Zealand on the 25th May, were delivered in London yesterday. DISTURANCES IN PALESTINE. London, 6th. The disturbances which wore recently reported to be taking place at Haifa, in Palestine, between Moslems and Christians, have been quelled, and the town is now quiet. Her Majesty’s gunboats, which were despatched to Haifa, have returned to their station in the Miditerranean. TAXING N.S.W. PRODUCE. Sydney, Wednesday. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Bill for imposing new taxes on wool, coal, and stock was read a second time on a division, by a majority of only two. It is considered doubtful whether the Government will proceed with the measure in the face of such a small majority.
