A petition lias been drawn up, and now lies at Mr Ballam’s for signature, petitioning the House to cancel the arrangement 'whereby one-fourth of the revenue of the Patea County went to form an impracticable harbour at New Plymouth. There seems to be little hope of any good arising from the work proposed to bn done; and the folly in persisting in some of the harbor projects afloat in the colony is almost akin to madness. The Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association met on Thursday evening, to hear the opening address of their president, Mr Bridge. The subject which had been chosen for him was the advantages to be derived from improvement associations and kindred societies. The president gave a good outline of what the association was intended to accomplish, pointing out that careful reading and calm reflection were among the first essentials, while a power of expressing in clear and forcible language the ideas which a speaker wished to convey could in most cases be acquired only by practice. Mr A. Milne, the vicepresident, made a few remarks, which were well received. There were several now members enrolled, and there is every prospect of the society being a success. An essay is to be given by Mr Scott, one of the members, on the progress of colonisation, to be road at the next meeting. Mr Axur’s Stock.— This fine herd is now in the yards, and judging from their appearance, and the liberal terms of sale, prices may be expected to rule high.
