HAWERA.

[fkoji 'oub coekespondent,]

: Public opinion.— The public are at last awakening to the fact that the New Plymouth Harbor Board is robbing this County wholesale by the powers that are conferred upon it by the New Plymouth Harbor Act. There is to be a public meeting next Saturday, to protest against the twenty-five per cent, of our Land Fund being swallowed up as proposed. Resolutions will also be proposed urging upon the Government the speedy occupation of the Plains. It is quite time some action in these matters should be taken, as in a great measure the future prosperity of the district depends upon them. A Billiard Tournament took place at Prosser’s hotel last Monday. There were fourteen players. Carroll (5 points) opened the play with Speckman (40), but the latter had no show. Heaphy (10) beat Owen (25) after a well contested game. Lloyd (20) beat Walker (40) easily. Rawlings (15) never went near O’Connor (40). Robinson (20) and Farrington (15) was a very well contested game, the latter winning. Crowhurst (15) and Murray (10) was also a close game, the latter winning by a fluke. Fernandez (scratch) and W. Prosser (15) was won by the latter after playing a very plucky game. In the second pairs Heaphy beat Murray easily. The .other. pairs viz., Lloyd and Carroll, Farrington and Prosser, will be played to-morrow night. O’Connor was the odd man in drawing off second paces. . ; ' ' There are many and just complaints by the travelling public at the irregular way Young’s coaches have been running of late between Stratford and Wanganui. Nobody seems to have the faintest idea when the coaches start or,when expected to arrive. Last Saturday, in consequence of the unusual hour at which the down coach , arrived ;here, the mails had to be: taken to Wanganui on horse back, ? ’; ■
