Rain fell heavily About, - .','clihl. o’clock, preventing many from attending who would have otherwise joined/in-the jollification. The room was throe-parts filled, and a lively spirit? prevailed. The entertainment one of a scries hold fortnightly, under the management of a committee, who desire to promote good fellowship among the settlers by frequent social reunions during the dull winter evenings. Several gentlemen at Carlyle had conditionally promised to assist in enlivening the programme with songs' and other contributions; but the fates wore against them, for only two of the Carlyle party appeared on the scene, the others being prevented, by various engagements. The programme had to be filled up by local talent, and the auditors were probably not much disappointed on the whole. Dancing “ set in” about ton o’clock, and there are reports going .about that the fiddle was kept going till three next morning—which must be a mistake. ♦ - .
