Estridge gave evidence in Court against him. MAORI PRISONERS. ATTEMPT TO FORCE A TRIAL. Dunedin, Friday. At the Supreme Court yesterday, Mr Travers applied for a rule for a writ of Habeas Corpus in the case of Winiata Pirata, one of the Maoris at present waiting trial in Dunedin gaol. The rule was refused. SHOCKING ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE. Napier, Friday. William Collins, groom at livery stables, attempted suicide this morning. He loaded a gun, placed the muzzle under his chin, and pulled the trigger. His jaws, tongue, and nose were blown away, but his brain was uninjured. He was conveyed to the hospital. Collins had been drinking hard, and has a wife and three children.
