THE DERBY WINNER. London, 2Gth. The race for the Derby took place today, and resulted as follows ;—Bon d’Or, 1; Robert L’Diable, 2; Mask, 3. LONDON WOOL SALES. May 2Cth. At the wool sales to-day 9300 bales were offered, making a total of 281,000 bales catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was weaker. London, 26th. At the wool sales to-day, 14,000 bales were offered, making a total of 289,200 catalogued since the opening. The tone of sales is unchanged. London, 27th. At wool sales to-day, 11,500 offered. The tone of sales shews prices firmly maintained. 1,400 bales were withdrawn. LONDON MARKETS. London, 2Gth. Consols 99L Adelaide wheat 5 Is, flat. Tallow is active. London, 27th. Five per cent. New Zealand loan 1879,105. HOMEWARD SHIP DISABLED. Valparaiso, 26th. The ship Antipodes, bound from Sydney to London, ■which put in here recently in leaky state and to discharge cargo, will probably have to be coudemed. COERCING TURKEY. Loudon, 2Gth. With a view to bring about a settlement of the territorial claims of Monte negro under the Treaty of Berlin, the Austrian Government has made a proposal to the Great Powers that a blockade of Scutari, on the Albanian coast, should bo forthwith proclaimed, so as to prevent the Albanians obtaining reinforcements. INWARD SUEZ MAIL. Albany, 26th. The P. and O. Company’s steamship Bangalore, with the inward Suez mails, dated London, April 25, arrived in King George’s Sound to-day. , London, 26th. Money Wigram’s steamer Somersetshire arrived at Plymouth to-day. London, 26th. The Suez and Brindisi homeward mails were delivered hero to-day, ACCEPTING AFGHAN PRETENDER. London, ’27th. The London Press confirm a report lately circulated that the Ameership of Afghanistan has been offered to the Afghan pretender, Abdeerahman Khan. The offer is said to have been made conditionally on friendly relations with the British Government, and in order to conciliate the' Afghans and. maintain the dynasty of Dost Mahomaed,
ENGLISH POLITICS. London, 26th. Sir William Vernon Harcourt, who was appointed Home Secretary in the new Ministry, but was defeated in seeking re-election for Oxford, lias been elected for Derby, in place of Mr Samuel Plimsoll, who has resigned. POLITICS IN VICTORIA. Melbourne, 25th. A caucus of members of the Opposition has been held, at which it was resolved to hold a mass meeting in conjunction with the Reform League, in order to condemn Mr Service’s Bill for reform of Constitution, now before the House. INWARD ORIENT STEAMER. Adelaide, May 2Gth. The Orient Steam Navigation Company’s Cotopaxi has arrived from Plymouth. COAL STRIKE. Sydney, 26th. A conference between the delegates and strikers among the Newcastle coal miners, has resulted in all hopes of settlement being dispelled. The strikers are determined to persist till they obtain their own terms. NEW SEASON TEAS. Hong Kong, 26th. The opening prices for China teas at Foochow are two taels above last year. The quality is considered about the same as last season. ITALIAN POLITICS. Romo, 27th. The elections to the Italian Parliamentare now proceeding. Garibaldi has chosen the opportunity to address a letter to the electors, in which he severely attacks the present dynasty, and declares it is mining Italy.
