HAWERA.
[FROM OUU CORUKSI'ONDEN T.] Shooting seems to be all the go now. Everyone possessing a gun takes out a license, and talks confidently of the big bag he intends to bring homo. These well-filled - bags .never- appear, however; and in the matter of dogs, all sorts of mongrels are pointed out as magnificent setters or pointers, as'the case may be. One hears of nothing at present but the exploits of these sportsmen in former times. In fact, from the “ blow,” I anticipated . that all the: carters in Hawcr'a would have busy work carting pheasants to Carlyle for “ forrin ” markets by the fast and furious s. s. “Patea.” Alas! every anticipation has been crnelly blasted. One wellknown Boniface, who by his own reputation should have filled his larder for weeks to' come, has been 'out several times, and returned with, the grand total of ml. A party of eight or ton went last Saturday to do execution amongst the feathered kind, and returned with about eight pheasants, two thicks, and some small ~quail. Casualitics: one man shot in the 1 leg, and one or two others missed by .accident. The Men forming the road beyond Opurinkc are pushing on much better was expected. Last week, notwithstanding the bad weather, they did abont three miles; and their officers expect to meet the Stony River force in less, than a month’s time. They are not forming the road .at present to any great width, as they wish to meet before the bad winter weather sets in. The country between Opnnakc and Stoncy river is mostly swamps; therefore it is obviously wise to get the first formation hurried through. The camps at present are about 15 miles apart. Haweiu. People feel particularly sore at the manner in which the Wanganui Education -Board has treated the Gpmmitteo of the Hawcra Institute, re tbeir subsidy ; and they intend to push the matter even to the extent of petitioning Parliament, in the event of their communication with the Government failing! to secure'them redress from this wholesale robbery which is to enrich the Wanganui Library. / ‘ ! Times are looking much more lively here; Money seems to be more plenti4 . ful, and strangers are flocking in every . day.
