WAVERLEY.

[FROM OUU CORRESPONDENT.]; The attempt to establish a School Library has been so far a success. The Library Committee, of which Mr John Thurston is chairman, have taken a Aviso step in sending to Wellington and having the books for their Library selected by Mr John Hislop, whose name in connection with school libraries is almost a household word in Otago. Our schoolmaster deserves some credit in the matter, as he has collected all the money for the founding of the Library ; but he says it Avas a pleasure'to collect money for such a purpose, as parents and friends were thoroughly willing to subscribe Avhen they knew the object. This shoAVg a good feeling between parents ami teacher, ami Waycrley is to be complimented, during these hard times, in having raised fifty pounds for such a ladnblc purpose. Mr G. S. Bridge, Chairman of the Wairoa Road Board, has shewn his interest in the education of our youth, by sending for a copy of Macaulay’s “ Essays,” bound in calf, to be given to the best arithmetician in school at the Christmas examination. It might bo well if some other parents folloAVcd his example.

Toavn Board Elections.— Tavo candidates came forward, and it was a question>as to which avas the more eligible. The resnlt of the poll was that Mr James BoAvie shcAved 19 votes in his favor, and Mr (Samuel CaldAvell 10; so that the competition Avas . close.
