RAILWAY MUDDLING.
Sin,—l observe by the telegrams that tlio timber for railway bridges is lobe taken by the Hinemoa to Opunake. This, I presume, is for the line from Opunake to Stratford. That line will, no doubt, be pushed on with all speed, so as to bring Waimate nearer to “dear old Taranaki.’ Here we have a deliberate attempr to cut off the main portion of the district, and divert the trade. “ Our” member is still true to his mission. The Opunakc-Strat-ford lino will be opened before the main lino is finished through Patea County, and we may expect our lino to dawdle along in a provokingly liesurely manner because that style will best suit the interests of Taranaki. The excuse has been made that disputes about Station sites have retarded the work. I don’t believe a word of it, for the Government appears all along to have made iip its mind to favor the few at the expense of the many, and no amount of agitation on behalf of the public would move them a peg from the position they have deliberately taken up.
But, oven supposing that the agitations have caused delay j.that can only apply t 0 the Station sites. Then what about the other portions of the line ?. Why could not the earthworks be gone on with ? This talk is just one more piece of the same sort of humbug wo have always had displayed towards ns by our so : callcd honorable member. Why is this timber being brought to ; Opunake at such enormous cost, as it must be, to the colony ? r There is abundance of excellent timber growing along the line which I suppose will now be, burnt oily to make room for the imported article. This is another matter that needs explaining ; but I suppose we shall be toW that the local timber is unsuitable. Practical experience shows that it will last at least ten years, and 1 doubt if the imported article will last much if any longer. Wo have now got two good newspapers in the County, and I hope they will let a little daylight into these matters.—l am, &c. PLAIN SAILING. ; Carlyle, May 3. I
