PATEA WEST ROAD BOARD.
Tht' monthly meeting of ths board was held at Kakaramea on Monday. Present, Messrs Mcßae (in the chair}, Campbell, Paterson, Chapman, and Taylor. A letter from the Treasury informed the board that no farther subsidies can be expected, in accordance with a proposal approved by Parliament. The board were also informed from the Treasury that the sum or £O3 3s 9d had been paid to the board’s credit on account of deferred payment of land. Plans were received from Messrs Fraser & Tregear, showing proposed deviation o J _ Wilson-road, and the board resolved deviation of this road be gazetted. The board authorised Mr Campbell to improve the cutting of Taumaha-road, so far as the money voted remains unexpended. Resolved that two lengths of culverts at Peacock’s cutting be removed to repair culverts at Christie’s lower gate, and that Mr Campbell see to the work being done. Resolved that the balance of money voted for Lower Manutahiroad, and not expended, be spent on Tullock’s cutting, and that Messrs Taylor and M archant be a committee to carry out the work. Tenders for impounding stock from off the ’district roads were received as follow :—(1.) For impounding horses and cattle, 2nd per head ; sheep and pigs, Id per head. (2.) For impounding, £3O per annum. The Board accepted the first tender, Mr Ridley’s, at so much per head ; and the impounding to be advertised as commencing on the 19th. Accounts passed for payment : Messrs Fraser and Tregear, £8 Bs, and Patea Mail, 10s 6d.
~ A Boiler Explosion in Glasgow killed 16 persons on the 4th March, and thirty were severely injured. On the 7th, another explosion killed twenty-three. Fifteen mining prospectors in' Colorado have been killed by the Indians.
