HAW E RA.
(FROM OUR OW.V CORRESi'ONDFN’T.) / January 'll. Ox Saturday last (ho township was enlivened by iho Constabulary, who marched ill headed by their band. On arriving at (lie Government paddock, they were broken off for a short lime, the men taking ad vantage or' the short spell to quench their thi sf, Timy then maivheil up and down Princes-street, tin; band playing ‘‘ Grandt'atlrer’s Clock ” and “ An Id Lang Syne” marches, and then wended their way towards’ tiie camp. The linn Air Bryce arrived on Friday, witli his Secretary and At a] or Noake, and stayed at Lloyd’s Hotel for the night. In the morning they went to Opunake, attended by Air Thomson (Native Interpreter), and returned to Hawera on Sunday afternoon. The news that the A.C. were going on to the Plains on Monday was received witli satisfaction by most people, a great many going down to see them off. Their camp will he about three miles from the Waingongoro Liver, and limy are to commence road making at once. I notice in last week’s paper a correspondent, who signs himself “ Townsman,” is surprised (in fact, grieved) at my report of the public meeting held in Hawera. lie says ho does not recollect one having been conducted in a more orderly manner. I arn not aware that I said it was conducted in a disorderly manner, or hinted at it in any way. He also says one would be led to believe it was a regular ‘‘beargarden.” Of course “ Townsman ” may be acquainted, or may have been in the habit ot associating with “ bears,” and will know what a “ bear garden” is like ; but I have had no experience, so can’t answer that part, lie then winds up by advising u your correspondent” to be more correct in his statements. If “ Townsman” says that any of ray statements with regard to that particular meeting are wrong, I say he is labouring under a delusion, for everything that is in that report occurred at the meeting. “ Townsman” had better bottle up his grief and advice until he can find a subject more worthy of parading it.
