CARLYLE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The Chairman (Mr W. Aitclrison)presented the following annual report at the meeting held on Monday, which was approved and adopted ; Annual Report of Carlyle School Committee for the year ending January 26th, 1880. The above Committee have the honor to present to the householders of Carlyle School District the second annual report under the present Education Act. The money at the disposal of the Committee has been expended in the following way : improvements to school property. Re-gravelling school-yard, forming and gravelling footpath round school, planting 50 ornamental trees in girls’ play-groiind, shifting boys’ closet to a more convenient site and repairing the same with new iron on roof and a wooden screen in front of doorways, trimming furze fence all round and getting gaps battened up, keeping in repair cross fences and gates, improving ventilation, putting on glass door between school-rooms, and keeping in repair the pump, windows, spouting, &c. furniture and school requisites. Seven new desks have been supplied, one black-board, brooms, drinking cups, &c., besides the necessary books and stationery
for school purposes ; one load of firewood was procured, arid a man employed to cut it up ready for use. SCHOOL CLEANING. It has been found very difficult to get anyone to perform this important work in a satisfactory wav, owing r.o its requiring daily attention, but it is now being passably well dune at a cost of 3u.s per month. DRILL INSTRUCTION. A competent drill instructor was employed for one quarter, at a fee of £4, chiefly with a view to assist the mastei in commencing drill under a proper system, hut as a cadet corps was shortly afterwards formed, drill was temporarily abandoned. SCHOOL PADDOCK. The upper paddock was let for twelve months at a rental of Ji7 os, and a portion of the runt expended on tree planting —the other portion is not yet due. DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. The arrangements entered into by last year’s Committee for the conversion of the school into a District High School have all been completed, and the High School opened on the 18lh of August with an attendance of 21 paying pupils. Mr Dyer was appointed head master, with a staff of one assistant muster and one mistress, Mr Lloyd, the assistant master, resigned his appointment at the end of theyear, and the Committee lias applied to the Board to appoint another one in his place. The Board having now some applications in from the class of masters required, will most likely appoint one at its first meeting, on Wednesday next. Meanwhile, Mr Dyer is working the school with the help of Aliss Williams. Mr Lloyd’s reasons for resigning will be seen on reference to his letters of explanation. [Letter read]. The additional cost of working the school under this system is nearly covered by the lees eliargtd, and with a small grant from resenes rents. It now only remains for the people to give the instituiion a reasonable amount of support to ensure its continued success. SCHOOL EXAMINATION. The accompanying report shows result of School examination by air Foulis : ATTENDANCE. ’file number on the roll at the close of the year was 124 as against 11G last year, showing an increase of 8. This increase is somewhat below the expectations of the Committee, for, although no summonses have boon issued, yet considerable energy has been exercised in connection with the compulsory clauses ; but possibly the existing depression may account for the small increase to a considerable extent at least. I APPLICATION I’OU NEW BUILDING. A new room for High (School purposes, 32fr x 20ft has been applied for, as also two additional rooms to the master’s bouse, and a small sum for repair of present buildings. The chimney in newest room requires to be altered before winter sets in, as it is of little use at present, owing to its downward draft. Tiie committee desires to testify to the harmonious way in winch the Board lias acted with them throughout the year, also i to tiie attentive and business like way in which (lie inspector and Secretary have attended to the wants or communications of the Committee.
