WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) January 26. Tee n-ual monthly fritting of the it.M. Court was held on Wednesday last, when a few civil cases were disposed of by Captain Wray. Where is the Town Board? The gentlemen have been elected by the public, yet the time tor striking the rate is' allowed to slip by, tbe result being that no rates can now be collected for another year. Whose

fault is it that the matter has not been brought to the notice of the Government ? I think it is the duty of the Chairman of the meeting, whilst others blame the Chairman of the late Board ; but wherever the fault lies, the fact remains, that there is no Town Board. The old Town Hall reserve is a white elephant. The rates for the ensuing y ear cannot he levied, and for why? Simply for the want of a little energy on the part of the public, more especially the Chairmen of the meeting, and the late Board. Who is it says, “Procrastination is Hie soul of business.”

There is another grievance, which only wants to be mentioned to the proper authorities to get. rectified. That is the post office, the holes of which are too small to admit an ordinary-sized official envelope, the consequence being The post office officials are continually called to take letters through the window. I am in formed on very good authority that tbeTownllall committee intend seeing for all costs now due, without, respect to persons, if they arc not paid by Monday next ; Tuesday next being the da}- set down for taking action if the money is not paid. The following gentlemen were elected members of the School Committee for the ensuing year, at the meeting held on Monday : —S. Caldwell, 60 votes ; D. McLean, 33 votes ; W. A. G. Wincheomh, 26 votes ; Murdo McLean, 24 votes ; John Thurston and Al.-'X. Aiken, 10 votes each ; J. M. Dickie, 14 votes, beveral other gentlemen were proposed, and a large number also objected to stand. After the Committee were declared elected by the Chairman of the meeting (Mr Fookes), the meeting broke up. Subsequently the elected Committee met, and appointed Mr Thurston tlnur Chairman.

The Wavcrley Light Horse Volunteers held a meeting on Saturday last, relative to the coming Tournament at Nelson. I have been unable to get the minutes, but will do so by next issue if possible.
