HAWERA.

(from; our own correspondent.) R.M. COURT. Thursday,-June 19. (Before 0. A. Wray, Esq., R.M.) Jas. Drummond was charged with being drunk and incapable, in the streets-of Hawera on Sunday. Prisoner pleaded guilty. • Fined 5s and costs 7s, or 24 hours’ imprisonment. W. J. Furlong v G. Hellier, claim £7 5s 1-|. Judgment for plaintiff for full amount, with.costs 11s. Same v A.-G. Knight, claim £3 6s. Judgment for plaintiff with costs 6s. Affairs in this part of the district are looking .rather serious. -Very few. buildings are now heing -put up, and those that are in of- erection were commenced before the . Maori scare took place;,-; be, finished in'the course; 6f;fv days, hiit afbsr it is up, I don’t see that it will he much advantage .to ’.‘the ; people; without the Postmaster, has an. assistant.' Throughout the whole of the Waimate difficulty, when telegrams were coming and going at all hours of the day and night, the Postmaster has been-Without assistance, the. consequence is that the public do not get the attention they should haVe, as it is impqssible for the Postmaster-to attend to the instrument and the Post Office at. the same time. X have been informed that several people,have written to the Government about it, but I have no doubt that it never- leaves the hands of a junior, clerk, and he, being, a person of great importance, thinks it is hardly worth the trouble of reading it, and it is tbroivn -<>.n one/side. V I should not be fit all surprised to hoar that our Postmaster has’^ resigned on : acconnt of having too much work. I think most bf the people here would be" sorry’ if such a thing occurred,, although wc never hardly see Mr' Chaney out of the office (I have seen him about once, I think). He is very well liked in Hawera, and with the quantity of work he has to do, it is wonderful that he can be as obliging as be is.

The .Cavalry parade on Wednesday brought out about 40. troopers. Two hours drill was done in the morning, and in the afternoon the troop visited the redoubt at Normanby, which is a masterpiece. ofdcTgeiiuity and strength. Great credit is due to those who have given thbir assistance in constructing it.

'evening, so * that. we are preparing for any emergency. ;
