An emergency meeting of the Patea Kilwinning Lodge will be held in the Town Hall, on Wednesday evening next. Attention is called to Mr D. M. Hogg’s great clearing sale at Waverley.

M.-ijur Noake inspected the Carlyle Light Horse on Thursday afternoon, and No. 1 Company Patea Rifles in the evening. The muster of both Companies was very goad* After the evening's parade, a mooting was Ir-ld to discuss matters connected wit!) the Corps, when it was resolved that a/uitiform consisMiig of bine iweed tunic, and cap lipped with red, be procured, each member to pa} T the cost of same ; cloth to bo obtained from Government store, at the lowest possible rate ; price of uniforrn ; not to exceed £2 10s. Black, Chapman, Connolly, TapHn, and Captain Wray, Lieutenants Cowern and Fraser, wero elected. Resolved, that the Committee confer with No. 2 Company, and arrange for the formation of a drum and fife band. Major Noake attended the meeting, and, on the question of election of non-commissioned officers cropping up, gave it as his opinion that it would he much better if the Captain were allowed ■to nominate them. A vote of thanks to Major Noake and Captain Wray brought the meeting to a close. -The Company will parade with arms and accoutrements, at 2.30 p.ra. to-day, near the Immigration Barracks.—Patea Light Horse will also parade. ■ Tenders for lining, &c., the Kakaramea Town Hall, will be received up to 4 p.m. on Monday next.

" The ordinary monthly meeting of the Carlyle School Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs Aitchison (chairman), R. A. Adams, Dixon, Howitt, and Kenworthy. The chief business was the consideration of letter from the Education Board, in reference to arranging for the opening of District High School, the appointment of .an extra teacher, &c. The Chairman reported that a circular letter had been forwarded to all parents, including Kakaramea and Whenuakura, who were known to have children likely to be sent for instruction* in the higher branches, and replies were shortly expected. As definite arrangements in reference to appointing teachers could not be made until the probable number of pupilshad been ascertained, it was resolved, That the Chairman and Secretary be empowered to communicate with the Board, and generally arrange ©isirict High School matters.—Resolved, To ask Mr Connolly to continue drill instruction for another quarter, on terms first arranged.—The Chairman Was. empowered to get fence'repaired, gravel laid, and the ventilation of the schoql improved.—Sundry accounts were passed, and the meeting adjourned. A meeting of the Carlyle Football Club will be held at the Albion Hotel this evening. Business of an important nature will be' brought forward. It will be seen by an advertisement elsewhere, that Mr James Lett is desirous of disposing of the whole of his landed and other property in Carlyle. We understand Mr Lptt has come to this determination in consequence of ill-health, and if possible he intends settling down in a more suitable occupation. Of the properties for sale, we might specially mention the one upon which stands the chaff, corncrushing, and wood-cutting machinery, which affords a splendid opportunity for any person wishing to enter into that line of business, as the plant is quite new, and is in good working order. The other properties are valuable, and should command good prices. Mr W- Cowern Will dispose of the whole by auction at an early date.' By Gazette received on Thursday, we notice that the services of the Norraanby and Waverley Rifle Volunteers have been accepted. Mr Long informs us that tenders for the new Post-office have been accepted, and work is to be commenced at once. We do not as yet know the name of the successful tenderer, nor the price.

At the meeting of No. 2 Company Patea Rifles on Thursday evening, as an amendment on the French-peaked cap, another species of tyle # was proposed, of which about a dozen were to be seen in the room. Strange to say, beside every one of these a hand went up for the -amendment. It was also decided not to include troweers in the uniform to be worn by the Company. ■

We heard with regret yesterday that Mr T. Shalders, late Poatmaster at Hawera* had been drowned at Cable Bay, Nelson’ whilst out sailing in a boat. ■No. 2 Company Patea Rifles paraded for drill in the Town Hall bn Thursday evening, when 66 out of 71 members were present. After drill, a meeting was held to elect non-commissipned officers, appoint Finance Committee, and decide upon, uniform. ‘ The following non-coranuM-ioned officers Were elected.;—A. King, Color-Sergeant; J. G. Beamish, R. Dasent, R. A. Adams,-*- Baldwin, (Sergeants)B Hunger, D. M. Harris, B. Dixon, M. Carey, - (Corporals).; ; finance Committee—Captain: Tregear, Lieutenants Dale and Haywood, J. Thomson, D. M. Harris, S. Dixon, and Bush. Uniform .decided upon was a blue Garibaldi serge jumper, Fxjencja’ peaked cap with.scarlet band,—rLast bigHt - Major Noake inspected the Company, when an equally large number were present.

The 8.8. Patea, whilst disengaging herself from the wharf on Thursday, ran on a snag, and broke off ,a blade from one of her propellers. Through this mishap, the steamer was detained till yesterday.. We would recommend that the Harbour Board see into'this matter, for there can be little doubt that such dangerous obstructions are .better removed.

To-day, Major Noake will inspect the Norraanby Rifles, at the Black-house, at 2' p.m.; the Hawera Light Horse, opposite the Town Hall, at 3,30 p.m.,* and the II aWo ra Rifles, at 4 p.m., at the same place. On Monday, .the VVairoa Light Hofle at 2 p.m.; and Waverley Rifles at 3.30 p.m. Mr- W; Dale will.', hold-a miscellaneous sale at hia fnart to-day?.. r , v ; . Nomination of candidate# for tlie Hawera Road Board will take r plWe at the Hawera School-house, to'-day. ’ : „ Qn Monday;:evening next,, in the Carlyle Town Hall, IpVers of. Minstrel entertainments will be able to judge for themselves whether the ‘Xcork ” ’or the real black is preferable. An advertisement in another column announces that the Georgia Ministrel Troupe (the members of which do not require cork to make them black) will give a performance in the Hall on Monday, and as critiques differ, we prefer to judge for ourselves of the capabilities of the Company before saying anything. Minstrel entertainments take well here, and we have no doubt the Georgia Troup will.be well patronised if found’deserving. Remember Mr. F; McGuire’s sale' of household furniture, &c, at Hawera, tb-day.‘
