HAWERA.
(i-rom our own CO u res ton dent.) March 3. The Light Horse completed their week’s drill on Saturday last, and considering the short time the company has been formed, the members deserve the highest praise for the manner in which they went through their various maneeuvres. Only three members were absent, and those unavoidably so. The men were kept hard at it every day, going through all the various exercises, including sham fights, &c., so that in case of any emergency, they might bo in a lit state to; take the field ; and I have no doubt that should such an event happen, they will make a good report of themselves. At tho“ conclusion of the drill, Mr. Isaac Bayly tendered his vesigr.ation as captain of. the company,.stating, that he was about .leaving for England, but should, return.,before they would be again required" to undergo another course of drill. ,It was unanimously resolved by the company that Mrßayly, to whom the company was indebted for its present successful condition, and who deserved their warmest thanks for his indefatigable exertions and able manner in which he had performed the various duties of his arduous post, retain his positron of captain of the company. The Hart Troupe in their second performance, drew the largest house yet- seen here, the want of more seats in the hall being much felt, and causing great inconvenience. Every one was delighted with the entertainment, and their return here will be eagerly looked for. The cricket match Inglewood v. Hawera, again resulted in a decisive victory for the latter team, who had only eight runs to make in their second : innings to win the match ; this they accomplished without the loss of a single-wicket. It is almost useless for any hut a first-class team to visit here now, as ordinary elevens are only made mince-meat of, being pat through in a most off-hand manner by our invincibles, who require a good beating for their own sake, and I should like to have the pleasure of chronicling a defeat if only for the sake of the same.
