Messrs McLean & Co. will hold a sale of drapery, in Watts’ building, Hawera, this day, at 2 o’clock. The return match between Carlyle and Waverley Clubs will be played on the ground of the latter, on Satuaday next. The following' are tiio names, of those chosen in do battle against Waverley : Messrs Fraser (captain), Jacomb, Arundell, Taplin, F. T. Horner, Black, Dixon, W. Dasent, Kitchen, and May.- Waiting man —II. Nicholson. Play to commence at 10 o’clock. After the standard' plans had left Carlyle on Friday last, instructions were received from Wellington that they were to roman hero till an official arrived to hold an enquiry. However, Government have decided the matter, and the plans have gone to New Plymouth The Chief Surveyor of that town will no doubt do a chuckle now. The Little World will be exhibited in the Carlyle Town Hall, tliis evening, and from accounts received of this wonderful piece of mechanism, we should advise all who can to see it. We believe the proprietor intends to remain here till the end of the present week. The s.s. Patea is advestised to leave for Wellington to-morrow. Announcement is made in another column that a number of sections close to the Town of Carlyle will be offered for sale by public auction, at the Court House, on the 29th March.

Mr F. R. Jackson will hold his Waverley stok sale on Friday next. Mr T. E. Hamerton will hold an important sale of blood horses, at the Haymarket, New Plymouth, on Saturday next. Applications from persons willing to impound stock from off the District roads will be received by the Patea West Road Board up to Saturday.

A monster onion was shown us on Monday last, brought from Hawera by Mr J. E. Keys, as a curiosity. It was grown by Mr McCutchan, sen., in the garden adjoining his private residence, and proves that tire soil thereabouts is of the best. The onion weighs 2f!bs, and measures 18 inches round. This is not the only one, as several more have been taken up about the same size.

The six days consecutive' drill for the Patea Light Horse commenced on Monday, with anything but a pleasing prospect before them, as it rained heavily ail the morning. However, it cleared up in the afternoon, and Captain Marshall put the men through a few preliminaries. Mr Fairweatber, we understand, has kindly gi anted the use of the racecourse reserve for drill, rifle practice &c., where the troop repaired yesterday. The usual course of sham-fighting will be gone through, and we hope to be able to give a good account of the company’s manoeuvres. Remember Mr W, Courtney’s important stock sale, at his Glenavon yard's, Taranaki, to-morrow.

The Patea Light Horse Volunteers will parade for inspection on Saturday next. The great 100 yards foot race, announced for Saturday last, was not so exciting as anticipated, several of the likely ones backing out. However, about seven started, W. Williams being the successful man, giving some of the runners seven yards. A race between Mr Lett’s pony (ridden by owner) and W. Williams then came off, the latter receiving 30 yards in 100. The horse was nowhere.

It will be seen by notice elsewhere, that Mr W. Dixon has disposed of the Hawera branch of his business to Mr J. Tiugey,

At the quarterly Licensing Court, held yesterday (before C.- A. Wray, Esq., Dr. Croft, and H. F. Christie, Esq.), a transfer of the Masonic Hotel was granted from J. C. Beamish to Francis Mullen.

A beautiful oil painting of Lake Wakatipu is now on view at Messrs Williams and Sons coach factory. The artist is Mr Chisholm (employed in tire-factory), and the picture is worthy of inspection. The sun-minding scenery is very skilfully done, both mountains and trees showing out well in their different colors'. We did not know Patea possessed such an artist. A change has been made in the pastorship of the Roman Catholic Church of this district-*-the Rev Father Pertuis. having been removed to Wanganui, and his place filled by the Rev Father Ryan, lately from America, oince Father Pertuis’ appointment to this district, he has made many friends and we wish him every prosperity in Ins' new field of labour. The rev gentlemen was presented with an address and a purse of sovereigns, by the congregation at Hawera', before leaving. Services will in future be conducted by the Rev Father Ryan, and we refer pur Catholic readers to announcement in another column.

An offer of £850,000 is said to- have been recently made for the London Telegraph, and declined by its proprietors, Messrs Lawson, Levy, and Co. As the Telegraph is rated fourth In value among the London, newspapers it would appear that the journaliistic market is at least ‘ firm ’ over there. Tne Times is roughly valued at £5,C00,000, the Standard at £2,000,000, and the Daily News at £1,000,000. ‘ The price asked for the Telegraph is a round million. The circulation of these journals is given at 85,000 daily for the Times, 145,000 for the Standard , 184,000 for the News, and 200,000 for the Telegraph. In point of advertising, patronage, the Times exceeds all the other three combined ; the Standard surpasses both the News and the Telegraph , and the former leads the latter. The paper of least circulation has the most advertising patronage, and vice versa. ■
