COUNTY COUNCIL REPORT.
(Zo the Editor of the Pate a Mail.)
Sir, —In the report of tho proceedings of the last meeting of the Council, published in your last issue, I notice several inaccurate Statements ; but the one which I must take exception to, is that referring to signing blank cheques. At the July meeting - of the Council I was not present, but front a report published in the riewspaper, I noticed that Councillor Sherwood had been complaining about cheques being signed by the two Councillors, appointed for the purpose, before being filled up, and on being asked if he had not done the same thing when lie was Chainrfan, he deified having done so. At the meeting held on the 6th instant, which was tho first one Councillor Sherwood had attended since the discussion had taken place, I asked the Chairman if such statements bad been made by Councillor Sherwood; and on receiving a reply in the affirmative, I distinctly stated that Councillor Sherwood had been in the habit of signing blank cheques, which was corroborated by the Chairman, who stated that when lie took office he destroyed some cheques signed by Councillor Sherwood. Councillor Sherwood then tried to explain the matter, by stating that he had said he only signed sufficient cheques for the number of payments to be made, but this was disputed by several Councillors, who "were satisfied he, said he never signed cheques until they were filled up. ... Trusting that you will find space for the above in order that the public may clearly understand the matter.—l am, &c., E. M. HONEYFIELD. Whenuakura, November 12th, 1878.
