QUERIES?
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)
Sib, — 1 do hot know whether yoii yourself will bo able to inform me, but perhaps some of your subscribers may) as to the reason why all police orders are so unpalatably received in Carlyle. It is not so in Hawera, Manutahi, or Waverley. The police in these places seem able to perform their duties without those unpleasant consequences which are continually occurring here. If a policeman approaches one in this Town) there is an immediate inclination to bristle up, and be prepared to question his interference, and if you are desirous to get any information on the subject, the proverbial answer is —“ Very well—there it is now !—I don’t want to havd anything more to say about it”—which does not soften matters much between Mr Policeman and oneself. Are their orders always of a secret nature ? Are they prohibited from shewing their instructions (not the Act) whenever the carrying b.ut of the same would be accomplished with move good iecling and satisfaction to all parties? I grant that when the Act is shown to one in black and white, there are urgent reasons why it should be complied with; but whether it is caused by experience of seeming or actual officioushess, there is generally an inclination to give the police credit for an over assiduity in some matters (not of a very arduous nature) and a deficiency in others in the execution of their duties'. I cannot help but think that were they to give head-quarters more credit for issuing instructions, and take less themselves for their own special discernment in reading up and posting themselves in the Acts, their instructions could he carried out with a great deal less unpleasantness.—l am, &c., .
