CARLYLE V. HAWERA.
The above cricket match was played at Havvera on Saturday last, on a first-class pitch. The Carlyle captain Avon the toss, and took first innings, but with tho exception of Fraser, (11) none of the others scored double figures. Johnson and Beresford were the most successful bowlers, each taking 3 wickets. The Hawera men then went in, and after the first four 'wickets' had fallen, completely collared the
bowling, Riddiford hitting in all directions, and after being in nearly three hours, was at last caught, having made 70 without giving a fair chance. G. Bay ley, 19, Johnson 19, (not out), Beresford 12, (run out), and Hamilton 10, were the other double figures. The fielding of the Carlyle team Was very loose, several catches being missed. Of the eight Carlyle bowlers who were tried, Coutts and Fraser were the most successful, each taking three wickets, though the bowling of W. Dasent was very good, only 14 runs being scored off 13 overs, and 1 wicket taken. In the second innings of Carlyle, Taplin hit hard for his 15, Dixon (not out) 11, Arundell 8, and Bourk'e G, were the highest scorers.
The bowling of Ba.ylcy, for Hawera, was very good, he taking 3 wickets for 11 runs, and Beresford 2 for 5.
The full scores are—Carlyle, 43 and 61, and Hawera 160—Hawera thus winning by an innings and 56 runs. Messrs Hursthouse and Crowlmrstacted as umpires, and Messrs Lucas and ,S. Dixon as scorers.
TLe greatest good feeling prevailed throughout. Mr Monkton brought bis apparatus on the ground, and took two photographs; one, of the two teams in separate groups, and another of the wickets, with the Carlyle men fielding, which, considering the number of good looking men, will no doubt meet with a ready sale.
