HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Wellington, October 22. In moving the second reading of the Native Lands Purchase Bill, the hon. Mr Sheehan attributed the cause of delay in Native Legislation to pressure of departmental business. The .whole of the West Coast Native disputes - bad been referred to the Government and Rewi for settlement. The Government saw no necessity for making radical alterations in the Native Land Law this session. But would hold a conference of chiefs during the recess and obtain suggestions for a measure next session. Meantime they would watch the operation of the Electoral Bilk He expressed regret at the waste of the proceeds of land sales by the natives in intemperance. Government officials would be absolutely prohibited from dealing privately in native lands. He denied that the Land Court was under the control of the Government. The present Act was intended to preserve the public interest. Mr Fox severely criticised the Native administration.

Mr Sheehan replied, after which the second reading of the bill was agreed to.
