WAVERLEY.

(from our own correspondent.) October 21. The first day’s competition firing for the belt of the Wairoa Light Horse, took place on Saturday, when twenty-one competitors put in an appearance. The belt is fired for annually. There are six days’ firing each year, arid the highest aggregate scorer takes the belt for the year. Having been won twice running, or three times at intervals, it becomes his property. The following is the result of Saturday’s meeting—A. Milne 47 ; J. Milne 42 ; A. Aiken 41 ; D. McLean 38 ; W. Howie 39 ; J. Thurston 37< The distances are 200, 300, and 400 yards. The cricket season was opened on Saturday,- with a match between the Married and Single. The players were rather slow in turning up on the' ground—-play should have commenced at one o’clock, but nothing was done until about three, the consequence of which was that one innings only could be got through, the Married men coming off victorious by thirteen runs.

■The annual meeting of the Wairaa Cricket Club was held in the evening, at the Waverley Hotel, Mr Mason, Captain of the Club, being in the chair. On examination of the balance-sheet, the Club was found to be in a flourishing condition, and the Secretary’s report was most satisfactory. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then held, and Mr Mason having signified his wish that a new Captain be elected, Mr Fookes was unanimously voted to that office. The following elections were then made—President, Mr W. A. Gr. Winchcomb; Vice-President, Mr Dyke, sen.; Vice-Captain, Mr H. Dudley ; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr F. Fookes. A Committee was appointed, consisting of the Captain, Vice-Captain, and Messrs W. Jenkins, H. Mason, and J. Thurston. Several new members joined the Club, which now numbers about forty. A match has been arranged with Patea for the 29th instant, to be played on the Carlyle ground, and it is hoped that Carlyle and Waverley will be able to get together a Combined Team to meet the Wanganui Union Club some time next month.

I forgot to mention that the Wairoa Light Horse are to fire a match with the Alexandra Troop, Wanganui, on the 9th proximo.

Several new buildings have sprung up here during the last few weeks, and carpenters are busy, while W. Hemmington, Esquire, bricklayer, appears to have his hands pretty full also.
