CENSUS RETURNS.
Tins following from Census Returns taken on 3rd March, shows the population of the various places within the severa Ridings of Patea County:
TOTALS FOIt TATEA COUNTY. Population, including half-castes, and Chinese, total, 2,988, being 1,7G7 males, and 1,221 females. Of half-castes, there are 21 males and 10 females. Inhabited bouses an.l huts 570, uninhabited 28, in course of erection 8, tents and dwellings with canvas roofs 27. Materials of which dwellings are constructed—Brick. 1; wood, iron, or lath and plaster, 027; cob or sod, 2; raupo, 2; huts of sod, clay, wood, stone, die., 2; tents and dwellings with canvas roofs, 27 ; miscellaneous or not stated, 41.
Dwellings of one room—brick, stone, wood, iron, &c.—“B ; one room cob, ranpo, &c., and bins and tents—43 ; two rooms, I2G; throe and four rooms, 209; live and six rooms, 112 ; over six rooms, 78 ; not stated, 6. Dwellings uninhabited, and in course of construction —wood and iron, 31 ; other materials not stated 5.
Europeans living in bouses of brick, stone, wood, iron, or lath and plaster, 2,778 ; in huts, or houses of cob, sod, ranpo, &c., 100 ; in habitations of unstated materials, 36 ; in tents, or dwellings with canvas roofs, 74. ELECTORAL DISTRICT Off EGMONT. Population (inclusive of Chinese) total, 2,962, being 1,749 males, 1,213 females. There arc no Chinese in the Egmont District. Europeans living in brick, stone, wood, iron, or lath and plaster buildings, 2,765 ; in huts, or houses of cob, sod, ranpo, &c., 118 ; in tents and dwellings with canvas roofs, 56 ; in huts of unstated materials, 23. The total population of the Taranaki Provincial District is 9,463, being 5,173 males, and 4,290 females, including 3 Chinese, and 21 male and 33 female halfcastes. Total number of inhabited houses or huts, 1,856; uninhabited, 137; in course of erection, 12 ; tents and dwellings with canvas roofs, 25.
