HAWERA.
(from our own correspondent.) At the R.M. Court on Monday last (before Capt. Wray, R.M., and Capt. Wilson, J.P.), only two cases wore down for hearing. A fine of 10s and costs, or 24 hours’ imprisonment, was inflicted on a drunk and disorderly, and in the adjourned case Samuel Larcomb v Richard Lynch, claim .£4 14s for removing a tree which defendant fell on plaintiff’s ground, and refused to remove when requested to do so, judgment was given for plaintiff for amount claimed, and costs. The Ilawera Light Horse had their first parade on Thursday last, and mustered pretty well, thirty-one answering the roll call. It is an utter impossibility to ever drill a volunteer cava'ry corps to anythingne.tr the proper mark, with the few drills that they arc called upon to attend. However, I have no doubt that the present corps will endeavour to make themselves as proficient as possible, so that by the lime they get their uniform, they will not disgrace it. Our cricketers have at last taken action, and for the last week have been very busy in getting - their new ground into shape for the coming season, where I hope to see many a well fought battle.
Messrs McLean and Broadbent’s sale on Wednesday, brought the k'-gest number together yet seen in Hawera. Very high prices were realised throughout. After the sale, a number of small boys, who had as usual collected, made an attack upon the beer barrel which was left unprotected, the consequence of which was, that the streets in the evening, were filled with intoxicated childien—many who had the reputation of being the quietest and best behaved in the township, being drank and disorderly, and challenging their mates to light. About 9 o’clock, a number of anxious mothers could be seen, skirmishing about, and conveying home iheir helpless and inebriated offspring.
