WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday last, sth October. Present: Wardens Bridge (chairman), Fleming, lon, McLean, and Lupton. Minutes of previous meeting read and con finned. Treasurer’s balance, £G6 3s lid. Permission was granted to J. Sinclair to erect a gate on the road past his section, lately owned by W. Giles. Correspondence read included—Application from W. Watkin for permission to erect a gate—deferred for one month ; letter from T. Harris complaining that the contractors weie not working on the road near Watkins’; memorial from R. N. Hawes and others, requesting the Board to improve the Middle Mangitangi Road; letter from J. Bryce, Esq., M.H.K,, stating that the Road Boards Bill, now before the House, would meet the case of the Board. [Since the meeting the Chairman has received a letter from Mr Bryce stating that the Road Beards Bill had been withdrawn. but that Government had promised to introduce a short Bill, to meet the case of the Wairoa Board and other Boards similarly situated.] The Chairman was requested to direct Dudley and Olssen, also Wilson and McKie, to proceed with their contracts at once.
Resolved, That the consideration of memorial from R. N. Hawes and others, be deferred until next meeting, the. Chairman, in the meantime, to make inquiries as to the price.of a brick culvert. Tenders were received for work—Lower Mangitangi, H. Dudley, £26 —declined. Taylor’s Hill, J. Dudley, £sß—accepted. For Nicholson’s Road and Oika’s Cutting, no tenders were sent in.
Proposed by Mr Lupton, seconded by the Chairman, and carried, That the road past Elmslie’s be levelled 16 feet wide, and the necessary side cuttings made. A proposition by Mr McLean, That no work be done in the manner previously specified, lapsed for want of a seconder. J. W. Kenah waited on the Board, requesting that certain repairs should be done on bis road. Proposed by Mr McLean, seconded by Mr lon, and carried, That tenders bo invited by next meeting for the necessary repairs. Resolved, That fresh tenders be called for Nicholson’s Road and Oika Cutting.
Proposed by Mr McLean, seconded by Mr Fleming, and resolved, That the Board accept Mr Winchcomb’s offer of the use of Ids office for meetings of the Board, Accounts passed and paid—Ross, £2 17s; Sangstcr, £6 9s 6d; Fitzherbert, £2 9s 4d; Robinson, £ls 12s. The Board adjourned.
