MANUTAHI.
(from a correspondent.)
June 18. Owing to unfavorable weather, the intended quadrille assembly was postponed from the 6th to 20th instant. On Thursday evening, the 13th, there was a large attendance to do battle with the problem, “ Why are so many marriageable men unmarried.” Mr C. Symes was voted to the chair, and a most amusing debate ensued. Some married members insinuated that the bachelors had not the pluck or moral courage to propose. It was retorted that “ none but the brave deserve the fair,” and “none but the brave can live with some of them.” Others argued that fear of the expense was a main reason. After a great variety of reasons had been propounded in very humorous speeches, the meeting found itself unable to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion as to the principal causes which prevent men from getting married. Vote of thanks to the chair concluded the business.
On Sunday, 16th instant, after the. Presbyterian Service, a meeting was held and the fallowing gentlemen elected a church committee—Messrs Hamilton (convener), Henderson, Dawson, Bruce, and Tulloch.
