PATEA WEST ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held at the Secretary’s- office, Carlyle, on Monday last. Present Messrs R. E. Mcßae (in the chair), E. J. Morgan, P. Wilson, E. R. Morgan, A. Hunter, and W. Balmforth.
Minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.
Correspondence included letter from General Manager Telegraph Department re telegram sent 14th March ; from Treasury, Wellington, stating that cheque had been forwarded to Bank N.Z. for amount of subsidy, £9O 19s 8d ; from SurveyorGeneral’s Department, stating that falling
and clearing bush, Hursthouse Hoad, had been done on private property instead of on proper line of road ; from Patea County Council, asking for returns of rates to 31st March ; from Minister of Public Works as to deviation of Kakaramea and Taumaha Roads ; from D. G. Fraser, Engineer to the Board, stating that he bad passed contract of Messrs Golding and Weeks on Kakaramea Road, and Mr Clifford's on Ball Hoad, but that the latter had been done in a most unworkmanlike manner ; from' Shaw and Adams, asking the Board to take steps to make a road to their land ; from A. Guthrie, asking the Board to fall and dear a track on the Manutahi Road, about 20 chains, to enable him to get stock, &c , on to his land.
The Secretary was instructed to obtain rubber seal for the Board.
Proposed by Mr E. J. Morgan, and seconded by Mr Wilson, “That Messrs Guthrie, Shaw, and Adams’ application for roads to be made to their land be referred to the next Board for their favourable consideration.” Carried by 4 votes to 1. An amendment by Mr Balmforth, seconded, pro forma, by Mr E. R. Morgan, that tenders be called for falling about 20 chains bush on Manutahi Road, was lost by 4 votes to 1. Proposed by Mr Hunter, seconded by Mr E. R. Morgan, and carried, “ That application bo made to the Patea County Council, asking that body to hand over to this Board, the proportion of land revenue received by the Council from time to time, from the sale of lands within the Patea West Road District, or else spend the amount under their own supervision hi making roads through the lands sold.” Carried. On the motion of Mr E. R. Morgan, seconded by Mr Wilson, it was resolved, That a rate of sixpence in the £ on all rateable property within the district should be made. Mr W. Dale was appointed Returning officer to the Board. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Engineer requesting an explanation as to why he passed contract No. 1 on Ball Road, and at the same time informed the Board that the work had not been done in a proper workman-like manner ; also to inform the Engineer that the Board considered him responsible for the proper completion of work according to specifications. On the motion of Mr E. J. Morgan, seconded by Mr Balmforth, Messrs Balmforth, Wilson, Hunter, and E. R. Morgan, were appointed to examine Mr Clifford’s contract, and to report on it to the Board. On motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr E. R. Morgan, Messrs Mcßae, Hunter, E. J. Morgan, and E. R, Morgan were appointed to examine contract on Kakaramea Road. Account of Patea Mail for 15s was passed for payment; one from Fraser and Tregear for £ls 6s was ordered to stand over till next meeting. The next meeting of the Board will be held at Kakaramea on the 30th instant at noon. The meeting adjourned.
