A REJOINDER.

xi. u i> it. ( To ihs Editor of the Patba Mail) Sin, — It is seldom wise* to dispute o vet statements in the Press, and probably the remarks of your correspondent about (bo solvency or Wanganui iiad better be passed unnoticed; but since the matter complained of is so circumstantial and professedly the report of a con versa- 1 tion, I am tempted to ask space for a few remarks. The story of your correspondent is that he met a ‘ MercbantPrrncc 7 of ibis small borough. This prince seems to have been of an exceptionally gushing disposition and he thanks heaven for getting over the fourth, while in despair as to the next month. His case is far from singular he is prepared to lay long odds that a five pound note could not be borrowed here on the afternoon of any fourth, no matter what security is offered. Further on this person is made to say that Wanganui is rotten lo the core, and, in conclusion, there is some mysterious reference to wire-pulling and rings. Tin's stuff appears in your respectable columns on the authority of “yum' own,” and is given as his opinion of the existing state of things here. Now, sir, I have been agood many years here and know the position of most people in business, and 1 have no hesitation insaying that the above is a gross misrepresentation ; and further, if this conversation is not purely imaginary, it was with some exceptionally impecunious individual. 1 have no idea who is your correspondent here, hut lie must be young and inexperienced. There is little wit in g Iti ig up such stories. Perhaps he sought lo write something racy, but it is a pity he did nut choose some other subject than to foully libel a community. It you think it worth while lo ask your correspondent for an explanation you are at liberty to give him my name, meantime I am, <&c.,-

A WANGANUI TRADER,
