PATEA WEST ROAD BOARD PROCEEDINGS.

(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sib, —I see a resolution moved by Mr Balmforth, seconded by Mr Mcßae, that the sum of £7 be expended on widening and fencing a cutting on Taumaha Road. The widening may he right, but why the fencing, as I know that a resolution has been passed authorizing any member of the Board to impound any cattle that were injuring the roads. It was only, I think, at the prior meeting, some members wanted a portion of the same road ploughed. Does any member of the Board run cattle on the saine road ? I also see Mr Balmforth and Mr Hunter moved that Mr Cheevers should have the amount of his deposit for contract on Tongahoe Road returned. Now, why should it be returned, as it appears that Mr Cheevers took a contract some months a g o — n ot quite twelve perhaps —but at any rate he started, and kept other parties out of the job. Now he throws it up, and puts Hie Board to the additional expense of advertising, and the same job has been taken up, I believe at 17s Gd more than the original tender, after a certain amount of work has been done. So the Board, or at least four votes, says—-we humbug about the job for months, then expend more rates for advertising, pay higher for the job, and refund the original deposit. So much for 1 sciuandering the rates.—l am, &c., . 1 ° OBSERVER*/
