PATEA EAST ROAD BOARD,
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the Board’s office, on Alonday last. Present—Rev A. Dasent (in the chair), and Alessrs Dcrrctt, Horner, and Riddell.
Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed.
Correspondence—Letter from the Treasury, Wellington, enclosing voucher for first instalment of subsidy £9 osßd ; under the Financial Arrangements Act, 1876 ; from T. White, New Plymouth, stating that his authority as Treasurer did not now include the three Road Districts in Patea, and that he supposed overdue rates would be collected by the Board’s own collector — list of arrears enclosed ; from O. Robinson, stating that as he had other two contracts in progress lie would be unable to start the Rutahi Road contract for six weeks ; from the Under .Secretary Grown Lane’s, as to proposed line of: road along the AVhenuakura bank of the Patea River, stating that Government would take action subject to limitations named, and that i£ the live per cent of land allowed in Crown Grant was not sufficient the Board could proceed under the 2nd part of “ the Public Works Act, 1876.” Proposed by Air Horner, seconded by Air Derrett, and carried, “ That the Secretary he instructed to write to Major Brown for a written authority of the course taken by him as Native Commissioner in regard to the deviation required by the natives in the Putabi Road.”
Resolved that Messrs Derrett, Horner, and the Chairman be appointed valuers to prepare the valuation list 1878-9, to be ready by the 14th instant. Resolved that a meeting of the Board be called for Alonday the 14th instant, at halfpast two o’clock, to receive valuation list and declare the same.
Tenders for cutting drain and formation on Wilson Road, received from William Pronso, 40s per chain ; J. Breen, 32s per chain ; and D. Murphy, 29s fid per chain. The Board considered the tenders too high and agreed to call for fresh tenders. Accounts passed for payment —William Watkins, £l6 ; William Gibson, 8s fid ; Eraser and Trcgcar, £2 2s. Statement of receipts and expenditure for the month ending 31st Decembei : Receipts—balance from November, £172 10s 7d; rates collected to date, £39 9s ; first instalment of subsidy, £9 Os Bd—total £212 Os 3d. Expenditure during month, £GO 5s lOd. Balance, £15114s sd. The meeting adjourned.
AVAIROA HIGHWAY BOARDThe ordinary monthly meeting’ of the above Board, was held on Saturday, January 5 tb. Present—AYardens B ridge (chairman) lon, Lupton, and Fleming. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. Treasurer’s balance £497 16s Bd, Outward Correspondence read. Inward Correspondence ; Letter from AY. and T, Hone, askingpermission to dam the water back, past the lower MangPangi culvert —• they undertaking to be responsible for damage. Resolved, “ That permission be granted, the Board reserving the right to withdraw at any time.” Memorial from J. AVicks and others —Resolved, “ That the Board decline to expend move money than already authorised on either road in the direction indicated in the memorial of Thomas Wicks and others.” Resolved, Y That the engineer be instructed to lay off a road up Taylor’s Hill, grade not to be steeper than 1 in 13.
Resolved, “That the chairman represent the Board at the Assessment Court, and that the whole Board attend.”
Resolved, “ That the the resolution appointing the Weekly//era W, the newspaper in which the advertisements of the Board are inserted, be rescinded, and that the chairman make arrangements with the proprietor of the Patea Mail for inserting advertisements, in- that paper.”
Mr Yercy requested that the Board would order the obstructions to be removed from the road to Te Kiriha;
Mr D. McDonald applied for a return of all moneys spent during the current year, in No. 2 Ward.—Resolved “ That a return be furnished for the current and last year’s expenditure.” Resolved, “ That the chairman order at once, the timber required for the Kohi Bridge.” Accounts passed and paid—Fraser and Tregear, £l2 18s 6d ; Nathan and Wilkie, £l6O Gs 8d; A. Stewart, £2. The Board adjourned.
HAW ERA TOWN BOARD. A SPECIAL meeting of the above Board was beli! at the Secretary’s oflice, on Thursday evening. Present; Messrs Furlong (in tiie chair), McL’Dowie, (It. Tait, Davidson, Baker, and Bamford. Proposed by Mr McL’Dowic, seconded by Mr Davidson, and carried, “ That a culvert be laid across the road lately opened alongside tiie brewery, such to be half a chain long, and that Mr Furlong order from the mill the shingle necessary for such work. To be completed as soon as possible.” A discussion arose as to raining the town, when it was decided that another meeting should be held on Frida}'-evening for the purpose of appointing one dr more valuators for valuing town property.
WHIENUAKURA SCHOOL DISTRICT. The first meeting of the Education committee for the above district was held on Wednesday last. Present; Messrs Horner, Coutts, Davidson, Sheehan, McKitterick, and Basoks. Proposed by Mr Coutts, seconded by Mr Sheehan, and carried, “ That Mr Horner bo chairman.” Proposed by Mi- Coutts, and resolvc’d, “ That Mr H. Williamson, Kakaramea, be asked to act as a member of the Education Board, Wanganui.” Mr Coutts, on being proposed, declined to act as a member. Proposed by Mr Busckc, and resolved, “ That Major 11. F.Turner act as a member.” Proposed by Mr McKitterick, and resolved, “ That Mr Duigan, of Wanganui] be asked to act in the capacity of member.” Proposed by Mr Coutts, and resolved, “That the chairman of this meeting be empowered to confer with the other committee chairmen to obtain the consent of two gentlemen eligible to act as members of the Education Board, Wanganui.” The meeting then adjourned.
