The Patea Mail. (Published Wednesdays and Saturdays ) SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 1878.
,Wc arc informed by Mr Sherwood (■chairman of (ho Harbour Board) tiiat (ho pi ins, specification?, &c., for tiio first section of the eastern groin were completed Last Wednesday week, and.that they were submitted for His ExcelUncy the Governor’s approval, on Saturday. No objection is anticipated, as the Engiueev-in-Chief ex pressed himself as satisfied. Some considerable modifications of the plans as originally submitted to the Board, have been made, by direction of the Enginccr-in-Chief, and agreed to by the chairman, on behalf of the Board, these alterations will not, we are informed, interfere with the estimated cost of the work. As soon as the plans &c., (which have to be made in duplicate) are to hand, the Board will bo in a position to call for tenders. A correspondent writing from Norman by, says —“ Mr Sherwood’s letter re Mountain Bond to Minister of Public Works, highly commended hoie. Messrs Livingstone and Davidson’s action in opposing Mr Dale’s motion in Council strongly condemned. People here are willing to believe they made a mistake, and afterwards tried to rectify it.” The writer winds up by saying that when Mr Livingstone and Mr Davidson were elected to the Council, they pledged themselves to Norrnanby voters to use their influence in favor of a nad through Normanhy, and wishes to jog their memories on this point. Mr Hickson, Sheep Inspector of the district, informs us that lie has given Mr J. Christie, of Manutahi, a clean certificate for a separate Hock of sheep numbering 415. The Rev Charles Clark will lecture on Saturday, the 19th instant, in the Town Hall, Carlyle. Subject: “Charles Dickens.” This talented lecturer never fails to draw large and appreciative audiences wherever lie goes, and no doubt Patea will prove no exception to the rule. The subject chosen is one of his best, and will provide such an intellectual treat that the public in this district have never had before. Persons wishing to secure seats had better make early application to Mr W. Dale, Carlyle, from whom tickets can be obtained. Attention is directed to Mr T. RProctor’s (watchmaker and jeweller) advertisement in another column, in which be announces that he will be in Carljde from Monday to Wednesday, and at Hawera from Thursday to Saturday. Mr W. Dale will sell timber, &c, to-day, at Carlyle. Schools under the Education Board will be opened on Monday, at iVhenuakura, Kakaramea, Manutahi, Hawera, and Normanby. Carlyle school opens on the 21st instant. We call special attention to note in advertisement by Mr W. Cowern (Secretary for the Patea Educational District), as to desirability of parents sending to school, all children of school age.
We received the following from one signing himself “ Walker and Webster” —
“ 'The orthographer, Patea jMail. —Dear Sir, —Would it be much trouble to print 1 entry’ and ‘ entries’ without putting another ein ? That ‘ enterics’ sets one’s teeth on edge and yon offend so often that it is time to wake you up.” We apologise for our error, but at the same time think that some evil spirit has been whispering in W and W’s ear, otherwise so trifling a mistake could not have set his teeth on edge. People that live in glass houses should not throw stones. The writer of the above should take a lesson in punctuation.
Mr Climie, the surveyor now and for sometime past engaged surveying 4,000 acres of the Wbakamara Block, inland of Manntabi, is reported to have nearly completed the survey so far as pegging off and numbering the sections is concerned. Sections vary from 50 acres (open land) to between 200 and 300 acres (bush land). Before the land can bo put in the market it is necessary that the block should be connected by survey lines with otherblocks, before the work can be declared finished. This will take from two to throe months. The committee ol the Patea Institute want to borrow £250 to erect suitable building. Persons willing to lend are desired to forward verms to the Secretary by Alonday. Tenders will be received up to to-day for the erection of manse, for the Ilawera Prcshyterian C 1 nirch. Alessrs J. Strachau Greig & Co.’s cattle sale business at Ilawera has so increased of lute that they have been compelled to enlarge their sale yards. Aleeting for the formation of a County Caledonian Society or Athletic Club will bo held -to-day, at 3 p.m., at the Albion Hotel, Carlyle. As union in this matter means strength, it is to be hoped, for the credit of the County, a strong society or club will be formed, when sports under responsible committees can be arranged for all parts of the district. Dates can be fixed to suit the convenience of the different places throughout the County, and facilities afforded for interchange of visits. At the 1877 Autumn Ploughing Alatchcs in England, Uansome’s prize ploughs proved remarkably successful. Prom August the 3rd to October the 24th, no less than 117 prizes were carried off by Ransom’s ploughs. AtOllcrton, on the 19th October, the special prize for best work in field was awarded to Uansome’s plough against 52 competitors. At Kingscote, Uansome’s plough took prize against 25 competitors, and at other places against 20 and more competitors, Some of the best ploughmen in Great Britain competed in the matches, and with the ploughs of world fame makers. The revenue of New South Wales for last year was £5,751,878; increase, £714,216. Victorian, £4,512,261; increase, £49,998. Queensland, half year, £823,615; increase, £128,202. The Wanganui Herald of Thursday last says—A splendid mob of 270 head mixed store cattle, the property of Mr Barber, cf Wellington, passed over the bridge northwards yesterday in charge of Mr Crocker. The cattle were all fine boasts, and are intended to bo run out in the Ilawera districts, where they will be allowed to fatten for the Wellington market. The Wanganui Herald says—Our native friends of the Waimate have a keen eye to the mam chance. For some years now a profitable business has been done in threshing out the grass seed that grows so plentifully in the fertile jfiains north of Waingongaro and selling it in Wanganui. Tito Kowaru is anxious to march with the times, and with that end has purchased a threshing machine from Air John Duthie, through the well-known Ilawera storekeeper, Mr James Davidson. Tito is determined to reap the full benefit of the confiscated land before the question is finally settled. The Patea Steam Threshing Company commenced operations yesterday. The machine is now employed threshing the Rev A. Dasent’s grass seed. Air Stevenson and others, of Ilawera, have purchased the threshing machine lately imported by Air John Duthie, of Wanganui, and advertised in our columns. On Thursday morning last, when it was being brought down the bill on the other side of the Patea River, by some means or other, it toppled over into the gully on the left hand side. It was at first thought considerable damage had been done, but vve believe now that it lias been got out and examined, the breakage is not so groat as anticipated. The machine is now at the blacksmith’s opposite the Australasian Hotel, where it will undergo repairs.
