PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the above Council was held yesterday. The following items are culled from fuller report, which will appear next issue : Estimated receipts and expenditure from. Ist July, 1877, to 31st March, 1878, prepared for guidance of committee appointed to consider as to rate to be levied, showed estimated expenditure £S,4:G3 15s lOcI; estimated income £1,389 14s 6d ; leaving an estimated deficiency of £2,074 Is 4d. A statement of actual expenditure for April and May months was also furnished. The committee rccomendcd that a rate of Is in the £ be struck for the year. On account of threatened legal proceedings by the Palea West Road Board, unless Spence Road obstruction be removed within one month’s time, the Chairman was empowered to defend any action which might arise. It was requested that the Chairman should confer with the Chairman of the Wanganui County as to repair of the Waitotara Bridge. On the motion of Mr Kenah, seconded by Mr Bridge, it was resolved, “ That this Council declines to embarrass the Chairman by laying down arbitrary rules for his guidance in the performance of his official duties, believing that such a course of action would be highly detrimental to the interests of the county,” On conclusion of ordinary business, a special meeting was held, at which resolution adopted at last meeting amending bye-laws was confirmed.
