HAWERA.

[FROM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.] July t A MEETING of those interested in the formation of a Chess. Club, was held at the Empire Hotel on Friday, the 29th Juno, at 7.30 p.m. Dr Cole was elected-to fill the chair. It being unanimously decided that a Chess Club should be formed in Hawera, tb.e meeting according!}' proceeded to the election of oUlcers in connection with that object. Nepean Kenny, Esq., was thereupon elected president to the Club ; AV. G. White, Esq., vice-president ; AV. E. AALanklyn, Esq., secretary aflil treasurer ; and J. Orchiston, auditor. The committee consists of the following gentlemen : —The three first office-bearers above mentioned, and Messrs T. Mason, M. D. King, G. W. Cole, and J. M. Byrne. The nights fixed for meetings of the Club were Tuesdays and Fridays ; the first series of meetings to be held at the Empire Hotel (Lloyd’s), the hour of meeting being 7.30 to 10.30 p.m. In the football match which took place on Saturday last between the AVairoa and Hawera teams, a great deal of good play was displayed on both sides?, and although the Hawera team came off decidedly victorious, yet the'Wairoas made themselves conspicuous by playing a very good “ uphill” game. The result of the match was a “win” for Hawera by seven points to half a point. Owing to the wet weather that has prevailed lately, the ground (which was most generously provided by Mr T. Mason, jun.) was in second-rate order, and on this account .tumbles and falls were numerous. Luckily, however, no serious accident occurred during the afternoon. The Hawera team proved too heavy for their opponents—muscle and'hone predominating in their team. The game was carried on in a genial and friendly feeling throughout, and created some considerable interest to the onlookers who had travelled from Hawera for the purpose of being present at the contest. Cheers were called for the opponent and winning teams after the conclusion of the game, the same being heartily responded to on each side, with the usual accompaniments. In the evening a meeting of footballers took place at the Empire Hotel, representatives from the Carlyle, AVairoa, and Hawera Chibs being in good attendance for the occasion. Mr AV. G. White was voted to the chair, after which the meeting proceeded to business, when the following resolutions were carried : —l. That any player joining two or more clubs in the County, must elect to play with one club, and that only in any County matches. 2. That a committee be appointed to arrange all inter-county matches, such to consist of a representative from each of the County Clubs, and two others irrespective of the clubs they may belong to, three to form a quorum. —The throe following were then elected to represent the various clubs, as follows ; —Hawera, Mr George Bayly ; Patea, Mr W. AVi.liams, jun. ; Waima, Mr AV. G. Cobh am. Mr 11. 0. • Tennant was also proposed and. seconded as the Patea representative, but on a show of hands, Mr Williams had the priority of votes. The following gentlemen were then proposed as the two extra rapresentivos,.to complete the County match committee ; —Messrs F. Bayly, T. Thurston, T. Turner, and F. Riddiford ; and.upon a ballot being taken, the two first named were elected. After the above business had been concluded, a meeting of the County match committee took place, all the newly-elected members being present.. In the first place the committee proceeded to elect a chairman, their choice falling on Mr Cobham, of Wuiroa. They then proceeded to elect a captain for the County Team, their choice falling on Mr G. Bayly—a more fitting captain they never will obrain. The following gentlemen were then chosen to represent the County in the first football contests :—Messrs G. and F. Bayly, Lucas, Cobham, Hargood, Marcbant, liiddiford, R. Sangster, Alfred Symes, Thurston, 11. C. Tenncnt, AV. G. AVhito, W. AVilliama, D. AVilliams, and Percy AVilson, Emergency men—Messrs Brett, Hutchinson, McCarthy, Albert Symes, and T. Turner. It was subsequently decided that the above fifteen men comprise the Count}' Team, and meet all-corners for practice on the Patea Football - Ground, on Saturday, the 14th July; play to commence at 2 p.m. sharp. I regret to notice that two gentlemen, who are well known in connection with the game of football, and who have been honorably conspicuous in every match in which I have seen them play, are not set down in the list of the fifteen or the emergency men above mentioned. 1 allude to a gentleman bailing from Manutahi, and another from Kakaramea. However, it may be the case (as I am informed) that these gentlemen do not desire to enter into any football contests during this season. After the match, a very convivial meeting —at which both teams were fully represented — took place at Lloyd’s Empire Hotel, and songs and speeches, interspersed with jokes, helped to carry out a pleasant meeting. A daring piece of burglary occurred on Saturday night or early on N'unday morning- here, the perpetrators of which have not yet been found out. The latch of the office -window of Messrs Inman tand Co.’s mart was prized open, and some individual —from all appearances a youth —entered the office, with what intent, is at present unaccountable, as no money was stolen, nor up to date lias any paper, deed, or other application been found missing. The perpetrator, however, has left his legacy, in the shape of a scratched window and any amount of mud, accruing from the dirty boots which he evidently was wearing at the time of entry. This attempt, coming so shortly after the attempt to burn down Mr J. AVinks’ new building, looks, as if we had some very bad folks settling hereabouts lately. Our footballers expect to have the pleasure of. contending agrinst a Carlyle team on Saturday nest, and I confidently hope that our local players will roll up and do honor to their colours, although they may expect some good players to be pitted against them. The old blockhouse (inhabited lately by the members of the A.C. Force stationed here) is being pulled down and re-erected, but not so the building used for the Court House. When are we to see a proper Court House erected here ? It is time the settlers moved in the matter. A gaol without a decent Court House is decidedly an incongruity.
