WAVERLEY.

(from our own correspondent.) June 27. I am happy to be able to report favourably of the Temperance movement here. There was a very nice meeting on Monday night, when several members of the Adult Society read pieces, such as “ Kory O’Moore’s present to the Priest,” &c. Master Lind, of the Band of Hope, though only about eight years of age, recited a piece very creditably, and Master McFarlane gave a song. This is the second of the fortnightly series of entertainments which have taken place, and the Town Hall on Monday last was crowded, thus showing how the efforts of the Temperance folks are appreciated in the district.

Mr Bryce, M.H.R., appears to have grown pettish, because the lion. W Fox was preferred by the people to represent their interests, rather than Mr Bryce. If Air Bryce had only done Ids duty to bis constituents, such preference might not have been shown. At any rate even Mr 13. must know, and acknowledge, that whatever business Mr F. takes in hand, lie will carry through with it, undeterred by what, to less thoroughgoing people, would be counted uiisunnountablc obstacles.

The starling of the flour null, lately erected in the district, has been the theme of very general remark. The quality of the flour turned out lias been eagerly scanned, and there is every reason to think that locally made flour, will, next season, find favour as against the imported article. One of our worthy storekeepers has just had a narrow escape from serious accident. He was over the Koni Gorge, and whilst driving the conveyance on the return journey, the horse commenced plunging and kicking till it managed to smash the dashboard and shafts, the latter of which it carried away. lam happy to state that the occupant escaped without serious injury. Uf course yon know that the storekeeper referred to was Air Ovcrcnd,
