Jane 2S. A COUUKSI’ONHUXT lias kindly furnished the f blowing from Manntahi, evidencing vitality and intellectual Site. Referring to the'gTowling effusion of a correspondent in last issue, the writer remarks that it “Farms to Fay” devoted himself exclusively to tli.it business, he might find it pay still better; or, by spreading the knowledge which he evidently prides himself on possessing, might be doing good in his day and generation. The usual meeting of our “ Mutual Improvement' Society ” was held in the Blockhouse last night. Bather line, and fair attendance of members. Mr Henderson voted to Ibc chair. After some formal business had been disposed of, Mr Dawson brought. Jor ward the subject of “ Bail ways visits Beads,” by briefly reviewing the progress of railways, from their initiation by Stephenson, to the present time, and pointing out some of the general advantages conferred by railways. He was ably seconded by Mr Lee. Mr Guthrie took up the opposite side of “ roads,” by showing - the greater cost of railways,—lines not paying, &c. Was strongly supported by Mr Peacock. The subject was then keenly and pretty evenly debated ; an equal number speaking on both sides. On being put to the vote, “ Railways” won by the casting vote of the Chairman. A violin solo, recitation, and some good songs, concluded the evening. Next subject for debate is “Water carriage v. railways and roads,” to be brought forward by Mr Peacock.
