Jor ward the subject of “ Bail ways visits Beads,” by briefly reviewing the progress of railways, from their initiation by Stephenson, to the present time, and pointing out some of the general advantages conferred by railways. He was ably seconded by Mr Lee. Mr Guthrie took up the opposite side of “ roads,” by showing - the greater cost of railways,—lines not paying, &c. Was strongly supported by Mr Peacock. The subject was then keenly and pretty evenly debated ; an equal number speaking on both sides. On being put to the vote, “ Railways” won by the casting vote of the Chairman. A violin solo, recitation, and some good songs, concluded the evening. Next subject for debate is “Water carriage v. railways and roads,” to be brought forward by Mr Peacock.
