IMPORTING.

(to the editor op the pate a mail.)

Sir —l notice among your local items of last issue that one refers to a query b\ r “ Importer,” in which he apparently hints or insinuates that a local or resident agent ought to be appointed to look after the cargoes arriving from time to time by the s.s. ‘Clyde.’ The grounds of his coing plaint, if true, would be good —but they lack the one grand essential, i.e,, truth. Anyone would imagine that no goods can bo received, no information obtained, or no information arrived at, only when the steamer is in.

Tliis being one among the many anonymous attacks made on me lately, 1 beg to say tbat “ Importer ”is totally incorrect in his insinuations, and I think he must be a very small “ Importer ” or perhaps wants the agency himself, as I state that during the time the ss ‘ Clyde ’ has been running to my wharf, I have, from 6 a.m. till 10 p.m., been almost without exception in attendance, to receive and deliver goods, and am not aware of more than two cases (still in abeyance) where the goods have not been delivered, or the deficiency made up. I think that, instead of by inuendo trying to injure me, he might have forwarded his complaint to the owners or Captain of the steamer —making some definite charge—and seeking redress in an open straightforward way, instead of attacking me anonymously. Possibly “ Importer ” may have a small parcel detained’for freight charges, which would no doubt cause wrath on his part. —I am, &c., JAMES HIRST,

Wharf Owner and Warehouse Keeper, Carlyle, Patea.
