TOWN BOARD CHAIRMAN.
(7’f> the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Siu, —I have been tohl that Mr Sherwood, by exceeding his duties, made a mistake the other day. Mr Hamerton, the solicitor to the Board, wrote to say that he had taken up the Crown grants for land belonging to the Board, and unless he heard from the Board in the meantime, he would in about a week’s time draw at sight for the amount of his account, some £46 odd. The obliging chairman immediately replied that the draft would be paid on arrival. But when the draft arrived it could not be paid, because all accounts before payment must be passed by the Board ; so the draft had to be returned to New Plymouth unpaid. Is this the way the 'Board’s business is conducted in general ? If so, it is time an alteration took place. The same person, as County Chairman, paid an account 50 per cent, in excess of the amount passed by the Council; and there is no doubt he would have paid Mr Hamerton’s account before being passed, if he had been allowed.—l am, &.0., RATEPAYER.
